Sylvia Mankge

(AWA – 2024 Rabies Vaccination Project)

If Sylvia looks familiar, you would be right. In 2023, she offered to volunteer her time for our outreach work as she is studying towards a Diploma in Animal Health through UNISA. She came for every single outreach except one and she turned out to be amazing and the team loved her!

So, when a position became available for a special 6-month Rabies-focused project, we asked her if she would be interested, and she jumped at the chance.

Rabies remains a concern in our area, and we have a strict policy that we vaccinate any animal against Rabies that we come into contact with. This policy means that we have been very effective in helping to keep the number or Rabies cases very low in the eastern Free State.

That said, there is no time to rest, and we need to keep the pressure on. This is the only way we can guarantee that our area does not suffer the same fate as KZN and so the aim is to extend our reach and to vaccinate even more animals against Rabies.

We are very thankful to the South African Veterinary Association and the Community Veterinary Clinics of SA Veterinary Association for their sponsorship, they are covering Sylvia’s entire salary, and they are contributing towards fuel, so that we can get out to more rural communities and vaccinate more animals.

With unemployment being at an all-time high, it is fantastic that we can bring Sylvia on board and give her this opportunity and who knows in 6-months what could happen…perhaps this project gets extended, perhaps we will be in a position to offer her a full-time employment…but for now we are thrilled to have her as a part of our team.
